Health Insurance for Dogs
Do you need health insurance for your dog?
In this age on constant rising costs and unexpected incidents buying insurance for your much loved family pet could be one of the best things that you have ever done. Similar to humans, the unexpected event of your dog having an accident or becoming ill could set you back big time financially. It can make sense to buy insurance for your dog if you can afford it. On the other hand can you afford an unexpected surgery if needed or the expensive veterinary bills that can accumulate when treating a dog with severe illness? For many pet insurance is a must.
Deciding on which type of health insurance for your dog can be just as mystifying as trying to decide on your own health insurance. Before deciding you might want to look at the reasons for insuring your dog, the age of the dog may lead you towards looking at insurance that will cover disease and screening tests for older dogs. For younger dogs you might need accident as well as illness insurance. There are at least four different types of pet insurance that you can purchase:
- Standard – pet insurance plans are usually the most economical covering the many basic health care costs such as illness, accidents, surgeries, hospitalizations, medications and x-rays with some offering preventive care. You decide which predetermined plan design option to choose from and the insurance company pays all or part of the bills to a certain amount.
- Custom – similar to standard insurance but here you are allowed to change the plan design provisions for the coverage amounts such as copay, annual maximum amounts and deductibles. You could have extras included which might not be available in the standard package such as dental procedures, monthly flea and worm control and blood screening tests.
- Accident Only – only accidents are covered with these plans with no coverage for illness.
- Discount – these plans allow you to receive a discount on the service provided if you take your dog to a vet hospital within the insurance company’s network.
Years ago it would seem unheard of to insure your pet but these days pets are living longer thanks to the great health care available for them. Nowadays it is expensive to care for a pet who becomes ill or has an accident, not to mention the yearly screening tests and vaccinations that are required to help prevent unwanted illnesses and diseases. By having insurance for your dog you can save in the long for those unexpected challenges that otherwise could break the bank.
